Shaken Baby Syndrome

Shaken Baby Syndrome (3 hours)
Shaken baby syndrome (SBS) is a form of child abuse that occurs when an abuser violently shakes an infant or small child, creating a whip-lash type motion that causes acceleration-deceleration injuries. The injury is estimated to affect between 1,200 and 1,600 children every year in the USA. It is common for there to be no external evidence of trauma. Injuries from impacts with hard objects may accompany SBS; this combination of shaking with striking against a hard object is sometimes termed the shaken impact syndrome or shaken/slam syndrome. SBS is often fatal and can cause severe brain damage resulting in lifelong disability. Estimated death rates (mortality) among infants with SBS range from 15 to 38%; the median is 20–25%. Up to half of deaths related to child abuse are reportedly due to shaken baby syndrome. Nonfatal consequences of SBS include varying degrees of visual impairment (including blindness), motor impairment (e.g. cerebral palsy) and cognitive impairments. Please join us for this excellent class to learn more about caring for infants with SBS. This is a great class to go along with our Medically Fragile Children training series.

Selling Children: How the Media Affects Kids

Selling Children: How the Media Affects Kids (12 hours)
American children and teenagers are subject to more than 3,000 advertisements per day. Children between the ages of 8 to 12 see an average of 21 snack food, junk food, fast food and drink commercials a day--- that is over 7,500 a year! By the time a female teenager is 17, she has received more than 250,000 messages about how is she supposed to look and has bought into the fact that she doesn’t measure up. This class will teach you how to help your children become media literate and challenge values, beliefs and concepts sent out by all forms of media.

Whole Family Foster Home Training

Whole Family Foster Home Training (15 hours)
Whole Family Foster Care is a new placement option. There is a need to place pregnant and parenting dependent teens in a placement with their babies. However, this placement changes the role of the foster parent to be involved in mentoring a teen to become a successful parent. We will discuss the role of child development across the spectrum of birth-adolescence as we open our thinking to encompass what research tells us is "best practice" for raising secure, safe and nurtured infants and apply that information to teen parents in out-of-home placements. This class will also include information on the shared responsibility plan, pregnancy -labor and delivery, attachment and the care of the newborn, legal issues, safety issues and resources to help the teen parent as well as the foster parent.

The Effects of Fostering on Your Relationships With Others

The Effects of Fostering on Your Relationships With Others (3 hours) This class covers the concepts of a family unit and how fostering can change relationships. The so called “land mines” we might encounter as we go about our daily lives will be discussed. Understanding ourselves and how the children we have opened our homes to might affect all those we have relationships with, either adults or children inside or outside the family, will be the focus of this class. We will look at ways for success and happiness now and for the future. Instructor: Bob Currey, Foster Parent Trainer

Heart Math’s De Stress Class: Simple Tools for Renewing Yourself in Stressful Times

Heart Math’s De Stress Class: Simple Tools for Renewing Yourself in Stressful Times ( 6 Hours) This new class is a practical, down-to-earth program that teaches participants skills for de-stressing and bringing more balance and ease into your daily challenges, communications and relationships. The program’s success can be attributed to two of HeartMath’s self-regulation techniques, which provide simple yet effective ways to shift into “coherence”, a state in which the heart, brain and nervous system are working together to help you cope with stressors. This technique will provide a foundation for personal and family resilience. The skills learned in this class will help you with: Stressful situations, anxiousness, anger and frustration, unexpected changes, arguments, disappointments, conflicts, overload, and making difficult decisions. All foster parents can benefit from this fantastic class.

Seely Park is a great neighborhood park with shade trees, basketball, water splash, and playgrounds for littles and older kids.  Long sidewalks for trikes, bikes, etc. This was my old neighborhood park and my kids loved it there.

Bring a lunch or snacks.
